Auto Mechanics Careers

Looking forward, in this article we want to look at the different auto mechanics careers that someone can pursue, this thinking is quite different from just looking for a job, you need planning.

Choosing a Career Path in Auto Mechanics

The days are long gone of being classified as “just a mechanic,” in today’s environment you need to understand the parts of the vehicle and how computers/electronics drive them. The days of simply being a mechanic are gone – being a highly trained technician is a career path you must think about now.

Lets take a look at what the future holds for auto mechanics.

What The Future Holds for Auto Mechanics Careers

These figures were taken for the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Handbook dated 2008-2009. These are percentage increases projected out through the year 2016, lets look at the categories in alphabetical order:

  • 14% in Automotive
  • 12% in Collision Repair
  • 11% in Diesel
  • 19% in Marine
  • 12% in Motorcycle

There is another thing to consider, these are jobs that cannot be outsourced. This makes automotive repair an even better choice for a career, not just a job because you know there is demand and the job will stay here, that’s a formula for a good, long career.

Opportunities for Self Employment

It’s interesting to know that about 17 percent of the people working in the auto mechanic industry are self employed. When we think of careers we often relate this to working for someone else, why not open yourself to the possibility of a career working for You.

When you look at the profile of the 17 percent of the people who own their own repair centers, they started working for someone first and then ventured on their own later.

Mapping Out a Career in Auto Mechanics

Not everyone has aspirations of owning their own business, so you need to map out your own career path. When you start this process you need to look at two things, your area of interest and market demand.

One without the other is not the right formula for a successful career, you need a combination of both. You should list at least 3 areas of interest (prioritizing them) and then see what the projections are for the next ten years. The reason for doing this is it will help you determine what type of school you need to attend, and the type of classes you need to take.

You have a great opportunity, when starting fresh, to lay a solid foundation for your auto mechanics career. Don’t be scared into thinking that you cannot make changes along the way, you are not signing an irrevocable contract here, you are only devising a plan of attack so you can plan your next steps ahead of time.
